Reindeer-calf-marking after midsummer
2007
Part 1
Another adventure with the reindeers at the polar circle. In may, Ola (a sami) came over to my reindeer farm in Germany. He asked me if I could come to sweden when they mark the reindeer calf. We wanted to look for the reindeers with the help of my trike. That saves a lot of kilometers on foot and a lot of time! After a short arrangement with family and friends, I made my dicision! We will go to sweden to look for the reindeers by plane. It's too expensive to look for the reindeers by helicopter, even for the sami. That's why we tried this by trike. Everything worked out very well. After getting all permissions and flying maps, there was nothing that could stop me. I wanted to look for the reindeers by trike on about 35000ha.
After about ca.2000 km by caravan we were finally in sweden. Next morning we started to build up the trike. I had to make the first start this night!
Adjusting and bolting everything together. I could nearly start.
Cleaning up my Trike...I wanted to fly this night! But until then some holiday.
Once again answers for 2 of the most asked questions: "Could it be that it is too warm for the reindeers in Germany?" and "Could it be that our herbage is harmful for the reindeers?". The weather in Germany at this time was rainy and about 15-18 degrees. Even at the polar circle, temperatures of 30 degrees are no rarity. And there is also green pastureland!
And they it happend! A heavy rainstorm made me standing on the ground. But the rain stopped after about 2 hours. So I could do the first take-off!
Just a bit slower... a mast to the right, and a house to the left... hhhmmmm doesn't work for the first time, backtrack and once again :)
A short look to the vane... now I'm ready for takeoff!
My first impressions of "Samiland"! As far as I can see, just IKEA! Only trees and sees.
That's the area we had to search for the reindeers. There are ca. 500 -600 reindeers...somewhere in the nowhere!
After about 1 hour we found the first reindeers. I was astonished: It was 1 hour after midnight, and best weather to fly!
And the next ones! But it's not the big flock we want to see.....
More and more
Here they are! Just 2km away from the other ones I saw. That's the big flock we were looking for.
Just some more rounds and back at home.
Now Jörgen and me could land, and go to forest, to bring the reindeers into the "meadow".
We had to backup the street per quad, so that no reindeer could run away.
It is half past three in the morning....I just want to go to sleep! It isn't yet dark!.
